DAY TRIPS ON THE SOUTH COAST

How San Lameer sits on the South Coast

San Lameer is on the lower KwaZulu-Natal South Coast, roughly 70 kilometres south of Durban. The estate sits between the towns of Hibberdene to the north and Port Shepstone to the south, with the full stretch of the South Coast accessible in either direction. The KZN South Coast is known for nearly 160 kilometres of beaches suited to swimming, surfing, fishing, and diving, as well as rugged inland landscape with hiking, wildlife sanctuaries, and 18-hole golf courses at various points along the route. From San Lameer, most of the worthwhile day trip destinations are within 30 to 60 minutes by car. Avis vehicle rental operates directly from the estate, which makes getting out straightforward even if you flew in.

Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve

Oribi Gorge is one of the most dramatic natural landscapes on the South Coast and is roughly 40 minutes south of San Lameer near Port Shepstone. The gorge cuts through ancient sandstone and shale, dropping sharply into a forested canyon with the Oribi River running through it. Hiking trails of varying difficulty run through the reserve, and the views from the rim are genuinely striking. The gorge is also home to a well-run zip-line and abseil operation for guests who want something more active than a walk. It is a half-day trip at minimum and a full-day trip if you take your time. The reserve is best visited in the morning when the light sits well in the canyon.

The Umkomaas River mouth and diving

The Umkomaas River mouth is close to San Lameer and is one of the most well-known dive sites on the South Coast. The Aliwal Shoal, located offshore from Umkomaas, is consistently rated among the top dive sites in the world, with a diversity of reef fish, sharks, and in certain seasons, ragged-tooth sharks in significant numbers. May sits just before the sardine run begins in June, which means underwater visibility is typically good and the shoal is accessible. Several dive operators work out of Umkomaas and can arrange boat dives for certified divers. If you are not a diver, the Umkomaas lagoon area is also a pleasant stop for a walk and a coffee.

Scottburgh and Ramsgate

Scottburgh is about 20 minutes north of San Lameer and has a good weekend market, a Blue Flag beach of its own, and a small town centre with a few independent restaurants and coffee shops worth stopping at. It is a relaxed half-morning option rather than a full day trip. Ramsgate, about 30 minutes south, has a similar feel with a beach, a market, and a handful of independent restaurants along the beachfront. Both towns give you a sense of the broader South Coast character without requiring much planning. Hibberdene, also within 20 minutes of the estate, has a fresh produce market that villa guests find useful for stocking up on fruit, vegetables, and local catch.

Planning your day trips from San Lameer

The Leisure Desk on the estate is a good starting point for planning what to do on and off the estate during your stay. They have local knowledge and can point you toward what is worth doing in the specific week you are visiting. The San Lameer South Coast Activities page also links through to the Southern Explorer and the South Coast Map, both of which are useful resources for planning time in the wider region. Avis hire is available from the estate if you need a vehicle. The estate shuttle service covers movement around the estate itself, but you will need your own transport for day trips off the grounds.
