Where is San Lameer?

San Lameer sits on the lower KZN South Coast, just south of the village of Southbroom and close to Marina Beach and the Mpenjati River. The nearest towns are Southbroom, Ramsgate and Margate to the north, and Port Edward to the south, which is about 18 kilometres from Southbroom. The estate is on the R61 coastal road, so it is easy to find, and the Wild Coast Sun and the Eastern Cape border are only a short drive further south. If you are using a navigation app, search for San Lameer and follow the signs from the R61.

Durban to San Lameer by road

The drive from Durban to San Lameer is roughly 145 kilometres. Southbroom is about 143 km south-west of Durban, and the estate is a few minutes beyond it. The route is simple: take the N2 south from Durban towards Port Shepstone, then continue south along the coast on the R61 through Shelly Beach, Margate, Ramsgate and Southbroom. San Lameer is on the R61 just past Marina Beach. In normal traffic, most guests do the trip in around an hour and a half, but allow two hours in holiday traffic or if you plan a stop along the way.

Flying in: King Shaka International

Most domestic and international visitors fly into King Shaka International Airport, which is about 35 kilometres north of Durban’s city centre. That puts it around 180 kilometres from San Lameer, so allow roughly two hours for the drive south on the N2 and R61. Car hire is available at the airport, which gives you the most flexibility for day trips, and San Lameer has partnered with Avis for car hire. If you would rather not drive, San Lameer uses Southern Shuttle and Margate Mini Coach for airport transfers, so it is worth arranging a quote before you travel.

Flying in: Margate Airport

For visitors from Gauteng, Margate Airport is the closest airport to San Lameer, and it can save you most of the drive. CemAir flies between Johannesburg’s O.R. Tambo and Margate, and the flight takes about an hour and forty minutes. The schedule changes with the season, with more flights around the holidays, so check CemAir’s current timetable when you plan. From Margate the drive to San Lameer is short, along the R61 through Ramsgate and Southbroom. Arrange car hire or a transfer in advance, as options at a small regional airport are more limited than in Durban.

Driving from Johannesburg

Many families drive down from Gauteng for the December holidays. The road trip from Johannesburg is roughly 700 kilometres and takes around seven and a half to eight hours without long stops, so most people allow a full day. A common route is the N3 towards Durban, then the N2 and R61 south along the coast; your navigation app may suggest a slightly shorter inland route via Pietermaritzburg. Plan your fuel and rest stops, start early, and keep an eye on traffic reports, as the N3 is at its busiest on the days around schools closing and just before Christmas. Arriving before dark makes finding your villa much easier.

Arriving at the estate

San Lameer is a secure, gated estate, so have your booking details ready at the gate. Villa guests check in at Villa Rentals Reception and hotel guests at the San Lameer Hotel. If you expect to arrive late, let the reservations team know in advance. It is also worth downloading the estate map before you arrive, as it shows Villa Rentals Reception, the Estate Office, the pools, the beach deck, the Superette and the Leisure Desk, and makes the first evening far less confusing.

Getting around the estate

Once you are here, you can leave the car parked. The estate shuttle runs a set timetable within the estate, with vouchers sold at the Estate Office reception, and for trips to nearby restaurants or the airport, San Lameer uses Southern Shuttle and Margate Mini Coach. For more independence, golf carts can be hired in two- to four-seat sizes, seven days a week between 08:00 and 16:00, with fuel coupons sold at the Estate Office. Bicycles can be hired too, and many guests simply walk: the estate’s paths link the villas to the beaches, pools and Clubhouse.

Festive season travel tips

December is the busiest time on South Coast roads, so a few habits help. Travel mid-week if your dates allow, and set off early to avoid the afternoon build-up. Fill up and stock up before the last stretch, as shops get busy on the coast in the peak weeks, although the estate’s San Express Superette covers the everyday basics. Keep water and snacks in the car for the children, and remember that summer afternoon thunderstorms can slow traffic, so build in time rather than rushing.

Exploring from San Lameer

A central position is one of the estate’s quiet advantages. Southbroom’s village and golf course are minutes away, Port Edward and the Wild Coast Sun are a short drive south, and Port Shepstone, the Oribi Gorge area and the busier resort towns lie to the north. If you have a car, it is easy to pair lazy beach days with the odd outing. Our guide to day trips on the South Coast has ideas for every kind of group.
