For a couples' weekend, the choice between a villa and the hotel comes down to what kind of experience you want. A villa gives you a private home on the estate. You have your own kitchen, your own outdoor space, a braai area, and the ability to move at whatever pace suits you without any hotel logistics. A 1 Bedroom Superior or a well-located Classic gives couples everything they need. The hotel, by contrast, gives you a room-service breakfast, direct access to the Lagoon Spa, and the Lagoon Restaurant a short walk from your door. Neither is wrong. Golfers who want an early morning tee time without fuss tend to prefer villas. Couples who want total relaxation with no self-catering whatsoever tend to prefer the hotel.
The Lagoon Spa is the most obvious anchor for a couples' day at San Lameer. It offers a full treatment menu alongside a sauna and hot tubs. A couples' treatment booked for a Saturday morning, followed by lunch at the Lagoon Restaurant, is a well-established combination that repeat guests tend to plan around rather than stumble into. The spa takes bookings in advance, which is worth doing before your arrival rather than on the day. May is a quieter month on the estate, so availability is generally better than peak season, but mornings still fill up on weekends.
If both of you play, San Lameer's 18-hole championship course in May is about as good as it gets for a couples' round. Tee times are easier to secure than in peak season, conditions in May are comfortable, and the course itself moves through coastal vegetation with moments of real stillness between shots. The Pro Shop can organise hire clubs if you are travelling without your own. If one of you plays and the other does not, the 9-hole Mashie course is a relaxed and unhurried option for a first-timer, while the more experienced golfer heads to the main course. The Clubhouse is the natural meeting point afterwards, with a good bar and a straightforward lunch menu served on a terrace with course views.
San Lameer has direct access to two Blue Flag beaches. Marina Beach is close to the Mpanjati River mouth and has a tidal pool that is worth exploring. Trafalgar Beach is quieter and more secluded. In May, both beaches are warm enough for a swim, uncrowded, and at their most photogenic in the morning light. The Leisure Desk on the estate hires out beach gear so there is nothing to pack or carry from home. A morning at the beach, a slow lunch back at the villa or Clubhouse, and an afternoon at the spa covers a Saturday in full without rushing anything.
The Lagoon Restaurant at San Lameer Hotel serves à la carte and buffet dining with bar and cocktail service. For a couples' dinner on a May evening, the terrace is the right choice — the temperature is comfortable at night without the summer humidity, and the setting is the kind that is difficult to describe without underselling. A reservation is recommended even in the quieter months, particularly for a Friday or Saturday evening. If you are staying in a villa and want a night in, the Beach Bite takeaway on the estate is also worth knowing about for a more relaxed evening at home.
